In 1999, a man named Zhang Weibo, with some time on his hands, registered the domain weibo.com using his own name. In April 2011, Sina called him to buy the domain. They eventually settled on a price of RMB 8 million.

Before Zhang Weibo, a man from Dalian named Wei Bo had also registered a domain using his own name. But because of his local accent, the domain he registered was weibe.com—and he missed out on RMB 8 million.
